Overview FPM/FKM Compounds

Material description
There are many types of FKM's based on the monomers used to build the backbone of the elastomer. There are also three curing systems that have different performance characteristics. These characteristics define the performance of the product. Contact your supplier to determine which product and curing system is best suited for your process.

Overview CR Compounds

Material Description
Polychloroprene is an excellent universal elastomer with an attractive balance of properties and few practical limitations. Universal neoprene grades are divided into two groups: sulphur modified grades and mercaptan modified grades. Sulphur-modified neoprenes have increased tear strength and elasticity, while mercaptan-modified neoprenes have better resistance to heat and compression set.

Main Properties
Good inherent flame resistance; moderate resistance to oil and petrol; excellent adhesion to fabrics and metals; very good resistance to weathering, ozone and natural ageing; good resistance to abrasion and bending fracture; very good resistance to alkali and acids.

Limits
Poor to good resistance to aromatic and oxygenated solvents; limited flexibility at low temperatures.

Natural rubber (NR) is a highly polymeric isoprene with very good physical properties, very high tensile strength, very good elasticity, very good low temperature properties, good abrasion resistance and excellent dynamic properties. This combination is rarely achieved by synthetic elastomers.

Limits
Without the appropriate addition of protective agents, however, the resistance to ageing and ozone is only slight. There is no resistance to mineral oils and greases.

Overview HNBR Compounds

Material Description
Hydrogenated nitrile (HNBR) is a family of products designed to eliminate some of the defects of nitriles. HNBR shows improved chemical resistance, a higher service temperature and a lower brittle temperature than normal nitrile. HNBR polymers are reacted with hydrogen to hydrogenate part of the unsaturation of NBR to improve chemical compatibility with certain media such as sour gas, ozone and some additive packages.

Main Properties
Very good resistance to oil and petrol: excellent resistance to petroleum-based hydraulic fluids, wide operating temperature range, good resistance to hydrocarbon solvents, very good resistance to alkalis and solvents.

Limtis
Low resistance to ozone, sunlight and natural ageing, poor resistance to oxygenated solvents.

Overview SBR Compounds

Material Description
SBR is similar to natural rubber in most respects and is the most cost-effective and highest-volume elastomer on the market. Although its physical properties are slightly worse than those of natural rubber, SBR is tougher and more resistant to heat and cracking and can easily be replaced by natural rubber in many applications. With the exception of silicone, butadiene has the lowest glass transition temperature of any commercially available elastomer and offers exceptionally good performance at temperatures as low as -62° C (-80° F).

Main Properties
Very good elasticity, tensile strength, abrasion resistance and flexibility at low temperatures.

Limits
Poor resistance to ozone and sunlight; very low resistance to oils, petrol and hydrocarbon solvents.

Overview AU Compounds

Material Description
Polyurethane is characterised by the combination of hardness with elasticity, excellent abrasion resistance and high tear resistance. It can be either ether or ester based. The ester-based polymer is superior in resistance to abrasion and heat; the ether-based polymer has better flexibility at low temperatures. Polyurethanes are available in both liquid and solid form. Polyurethanes are mainly used in applications that require a combination of their excellent properties: Toughness, tensile strength and abrasion resistance.

Main Properties
Excellent abrasion and tear resistance; very high tensile strength with good elongation; excellent weather, ozone and sun resistance; good oil and petrol resistance; excellent adhesion to textiles and metals.

Limits
Poor resistance to alkalis, acids and oxygenated solvents; poorer resistance to hot water.

Overview ACM Compounds

Material Description
The heat resistance of acrylic is better than that of most elastomers, with the exception of silicone, fluorosilicone and fluorocarbon. It is suitable for both hot air and hot oil over long periods of time. Acrylic has moderate resistance to cut growth and bending cracks. The use of acrylic is limited by its low flexibility at low temperatures. However, some types of acrylic glass may have improved flexibility at low temperatures at the expense of tensile strength and oil resistance.

Main Properties
Excellent resistance to heat and hot oil; excellent resistance to weathering, ozone, sunlight and oxidation; very good resistance to petrol and oil, especially sulphur-containing substances.

Limits
Poor resistance to alcohols, alkalis, solvents and aromatic solvents; limited flexibility at low temperatures; lower resistance to water and steam.

Overview of FFKM Compounds

Material Description
Perfluoroelastomers are products with a high utility value.

Main Properties
The best combination of chemical and high temperature resistance of all elastomers. Thermal stability depends on the polymer and curing chemistry. Peroxide crosslinking perfluoroelastomers have similar thermal resistance to FKM, while proprietary curing systems (such as Kalrez®) offer temperature resistance up to 327 °C with specific polymers.

Limits
The performance of perfluoroelastomers is limited at lower temperatures.
